HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a U.S. law enacted in 1996 that sets national standards for protecting sensitive patient health information. It ensures that personal health information is kept private and secure, limiting its disclosure without patient consent.

FIPS, or Federal Information Processing Standards, are U.S. government requirements for secure cryptography. FIPS-validated cryptography means a product’s encryption has been independently tested under NIST’s Cryptographic Module Validation Program and given an official certification number. Unlike “FIPS-compliant” claims, validation proves the module meets strict federal standards—often required in government, defense, and other regulated industries.
